What are GEO and AEO
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the optimization of content for generative search engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets answer engines that give users a direct answer to a question rather than a list of links.
Different terms, one goal: your brand should appear inside the AI answer, not just in classic search results.
How GEO differs from classic SEO
Classic SEO works with ranking position: the higher the link, the more clicks. GEO works with citation: AI picks one or two sources and cites them in the answer — the user never sees the rest.
Three key differences:
- Content format. SEO rewards depth and keywords. GEO rewards structure: a direct answer in the first paragraph, clear H2/H3 in question form, lists and tables.
- Source of truth. For SEO the site is primary. For GEO it is consistency of brand mentions across the web: media, industry blogs, reviews, directories.
- Metrics. SEO tracks positions and organic traffic. GEO tracks mentions in AI answers, share of voice, and referrals from ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Why this topic matters now
According to Bitkom (2026), around 39% of German internet users use AI assistants for search information. Germany is one of the most active markets in Europe on this metric.
At the same time, most companies in DACH are not yet doing targeted AI search optimization. Per the LILOX AI Visibility Report (2026), 93% of companies in the region are absent from ChatGPT and Perplexity answers for their own key queries.
The gap between the growing AI-search audience and the absence of companies in those answers is a window of opportunity. Whoever claims a position in LLM answers earlier will be harder to displace: models rely on stable mentions that build over months.
How to measure GEO visibility
Three metrics we track when working on AI visibility:
- Brand mentions in AI answers. We take a set of relevant queries — usually 30-50 — and run them through several LLMs. We record where and in what context the brand is mentioned.
- Share of voice. The share of answers that include the brand compared to competitors. The trend shows whether presence is growing.
- AI-referral traffic. Referrals from AI services can be tracked in GA4 and other analytics systems. Attribution accuracy depends on the source, browser and settings — not always a clean separate channel, but the trend is visible.
Before-and-after measurements give a picture in numbers, not feelings.
What to do right now
Three practical steps to start:
- Check your baseline. Open ChatGPT and Perplexity, ask 5-7 questions in your niche, see if the brand is mentioned. This is your starting point.
- Rewrite your top-10 pages in answer-first format. First paragraph — a direct answer to the page's main question. Then — extended explanation, lists, tables.
- Remove contradictions in brand descriptions. Same name, description and key facts everywhere the brand appears — otherwise LLMs won't lock in the entity.
